Background

CasaIndex PT aggregated property listings from agencies across Portugal with stronger search filters and cleaner UX than some incumbents. Users converted well once they arrived. Organic discovery was the bottleneck.

National portals enjoyed massive domain authority built over years of agency partnerships, news coverage, and municipal data integrations. CasaIndex had product advantages but only nineteen percent of the referring domain count of the SERP leader.

The growth team needed a link strategy that did not depend on buying placements from the same agency partners competitors already paid.

Strategy

Competitor backlink analysis showed three winnable gap categories:

  1. Resource pages on relocation, mortgage, and investment sites
  2. Data citations from journalists covering housing affordability
  3. Municipal open data integrations linking to authoritative statistics pages

We built a neighborhood price index with API-backed embeds. Journalists could drop a chart with automatic attribution linking to CasaIndex's methodology page.

Digital PR supported quarterly affordability reports comparing Lisbon, Porto, and secondary cities.

Gap closure tracking

Milestone CasaIndex RDs Leader RDs Gap %
Start 524 4,891 100%
Month 6 612 4,920 89%
Month 10 689 4,945 74%
Month 14 691 4,958 52%

Gap percentage measures relative distance to leader RD count, not absolute parity. Closing half the gap in fourteen months exceeded initial projections.

Traffic and engagement impact

Organic listing views rose ninety-two percent. Branded search for CasaIndex increased, suggesting media coverage reinforced name recognition.

Metric Start Month 14
Monthly organic listing views 186,000 357,000
Keywords top 10 (national) 41 89
Embeds generating links 0 47
Avg. DR of new links N/A 44

Resource page outreach produced thirty-one links from DR 35+ guides read by buyers researching relocation and investment.

Technical and product coordination

The neighborhood price index required engineering resources CasaIndex initially underestimated. API rate limits, embed attribution logic, and methodology page structure all needed shipping before outreach could reference live assets. We paused resource page pitching for three weeks while the product team resolved caching issues that caused stale chart data on third-party sites.

Journalists who embedded widgets became repeat link sources when quarterly reports refreshed. Seventeen of forty-seven active embeds generated secondary links when authors updated older articles with newer data cuts rather than leaving outdated charts live.

Agency partnership links, the tactic competitors relied on heavily, produced lower conversion rates for CasaIndex during testing. Logo badges on agent microsites rarely moved national keyword rankings compared to resource page placements on relocation guides with editorial oversight.

What did not work

Paid agency directory badges produced twelve links in month three during a test phase CasaIndex later discontinued. None moved keyword rankings within ninety days. The growth team reallocated that budget toward embed outreach and quarterly affordability PR.

National newspaper links earned during month eleven helped branded search but did not shift competitive head terms without supporting links to category and data pages. The lesson reinforced our original gap analysis: resource and data citations mattered more than logo placements for this marketplace model.

Next-phase roadmap

CasaIndex extended the engagement four months beyond the original fourteen to target municipal open data integrations in secondary cities. Early results showed Braga and Aveiro relocation guides accepting embeds faster than Lisbon-focused pages where incumbents already dominated resource lists.

The product team prioritized API documentation improvements after journalists requested clearer licensing terms for chart reuse. Small friction reductions increased embed adoption without additional outreach volume.

Strategic takeaway

Marketplace businesses often assume link building means partnership badges from suppliers. For CasaIndex, data infrastructure and resource page inclusion moved rankings faster than agency logo links ever would.
